"Oreo Cookie" Quote Integration

Top Cookie - Introduce the Quote using Context

Who said it and what is their title? Malcolm Gladwell, researcher and author of Outliers, explains "if you provide the ‘talented’ with a superior experience, then you’re going to end up giving a huge advantage to that small group of people born closest to the cutoff date" (25). Or after you’ve already introduced the source: Gladwell goes on to suggest researchers found, “that among fourth graders, the oldest children scored somewhere between four and twelve percentile points better than the youngest children.” (33)

Filling - Quote with Citation

  • Without citation, it’s plagiarism
  • MLA Format (for literature, it’s author’s last name and page number)
Gladwell goes on to suggest researchers found, “that among fourth graders, the oldest children scored somewhere between four and twelve percentile points better than the youngest children.” (33) Or if the sentence does not start with the source’s name:Atticus explains to Scout and Jem the reason people should leave Boo Radley alone when he says, “remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 86)

Bottom Cookie - Insight/Analysis/Explanation

  • Commentary that shows how your chosen quote supports your claim.
  • Answering the How? and Why?
  • This should be the bulk of your paragraph
Gladwell goes on to suggest researchers found, “that among fourth graders, the oldest children scored somewhere between four and twelve percentile points better than the youngest children.” (33) Younger children are often not prepared and mature enough to be confined to a school setting. Four to twelve percent is a significant gap between students who are learning the same material, but at different ages. Starting the age requirement at seven for Kindergarten will help with academic deficits and behavioral challenges.

General Rules

  • The top and bottom cookie should outweigh the filling (this is not a double stuffed Oreo). The paper should NOT be a list of quotes.
  • Create an Oreo every time a quote is used.
  • Do not use first or second person pronouns (you/me/I/we/our–etc.)
  • Write an introductory sentence that introduces the group of quotes and a concluding sentence that wraps up the overall point of the paragraph. A paragraph has at least 3 Oreos.
  • DO NOT end with a quote, a question, or a rewritten claim.

Example

In an effort to divert her guests’ attention from Tom’s illicit phone call, Daisy turns to Nick, exclaiming “I love seeing you at my table, Nick. You remind me of a--of a rose, an absolute rose” (Fitzgerald 14). Throughout dinner, Daisy’s attempts to lighten the mood only highlight her superficial comments and shallow conversation. Nick is not a rose, nor even like a rose, so her comments here do nothing to further or add depth to their conversation. Green - Top Cookie Yellow - Filling Pink - Bottom Cookie
