When God first created the heavens and the earth, everything was absolutely beautiful. On earth, there were no storms or earthquakes, not even any rain. It was never too hot or too cold. And God made all of that out of nothing, because all things are possible with God.
“By Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth.” (Col. 1:16)
Earth was the perfect place to live, but then something terrible happened.
Lucifer, who we now call Satan, decided to turn against God. A lot of other angels joined him, and they all roamed over the earth and ruined it.
As part of His judgment against these evil angels, God flooded the earth with water and took away the light. The whole earth became dark and the water around it turned to ice.
Even so, God was not angry, sad, or frustrated. He knew He had made the earth for someone to live on it. So He simply went back to work to make all things new again.
God the Holy Spirit roamed over the earth to melt the ice and make it ready to be restored.
Patiently, God began to clean up the whole earth from the mess the fallen angels had made. Can you guess how long it took Him to do that? Only six days!On the seventh, He rested.
day one : light
On the first day, God said, “Let there be light” (Gen. 1:3). God saw how good it was for the light to shine again, then He separated the light from the dark. He called the light "day," and He called the darkness "night." That’s where daytime and nighttime come from—they were God’s work on the first day of making the earth new again. And His work had only begun.
day two: atmosphere
Even though all the ice was melted, the whole earth was still covered in water. So on the second day, God decided there must be air around the earth. After all, living things would need to breathe. So God created a big layer of air above the waters on the earth. The air we are talking about is what you see when you look up—the beautiful blue sky.
DAY 3: LAND AND SEA
On the third day, God gathered the waters on the earth together in certain places and dry land appeared. The waters became the oceans and seas and the dry land is where we now live. Soon the grass grew and out of the ground came trees and plants full of fruits and vegetables.
DAY 4: LIGHTS IN THE HEAVENS
On the fourth day, God put lights up in the sky: a great big bright one for daytime and a smaller one for nighttime. The big light is the sun, and the small one is the moon. And just like a twinkling Christmas tree, God also decorated the sky with stars—so many that no one can count them. Before you go to bed tonight, look up in the sky to see the heavenly lights.
DAY 5: CREATURES IN THE SEA AND AIR
On the fifth day, God went back to work on the waters of the earth. He made all the creatures that live in the seas. He made all kinds of fish with tails and fins so that they could steer their way through their ocean homes. He made turtles, starfish, even the great big whales to fill the waters with colorful life.Next, since He had made many creatures for the deep seas, He made creatures to live in the air. He filled the open sky with singing birds flapping their wings and whirling about.
DAY 6: LIVING CREATURES ON EARTH
Animal Kingdom
God had made creatures for the waters and air, but no creatures lived yet on the land. So He started day six by creating the animals: yard animals like cats and dogs, tigers and bears that roam amongst the forests of trees, farm animals like cattle and sheep, and crawling things like lizards, snakes, and spiders. God made some animals huge—like elephants—and some so small we can hardly see them—like ants. Every single one was perfect, because God made them.
DAY 6: LIVING CREATURES ON EARTH
Man
Before that day was over God decided to make a human being, a real person. Like the animals, humans can move over the ground, drink, and eat, but humans are still very different from animals. We can talk and think—and thinking means we can make decisions. We can understand ourselves. Best of all, we can understand God, choose whether or not to obey Him, and we can learn to love Him. That’s because we have a special kind of life inside of us called a soul. Other creatures do not have this kind of soul life.
DAY 6: LIVING CREATURES ON EARTH
Man
The first man was named Adam. God started by creating his body, but the body alone still had no human life. So God breathed into Adam’s nostils the “breath of life” (Gen. 2:7). Suddenly Adam was alive, and he knew it. He could speak, walk, and most of all, he could think. He could understand the world around him. He could understand God, and he could make decisions.
DAY 6: LIVING CREATURES ON EARTH
Man
God put Adam in the Garden among the fruit trees, the lush plants, and crystal-like waters. Adam loved and obeyed God and did the job God gave him: he was in charge of naming and caring for all the animals. But even the tame animals could not talk to him and understand him, because they had no human soul. God knew this, and He didn’t want Adam to be lonely.
DAY 6: LIVING CREATURES ON EARTH
Man
So He made Adam a suitable companion. While Adam slept deeply, God took one of his ribs and created out of it a woman: her name was Eve, and God made her to be Adam’s beautiful and perfect wife. She too had a soul, and she and Adam had the most wonderful relationship, enjoying the garden of gorgeous flowers and trees and watching over all the animals.
DAY 7: rest
Now on day seven, was there anything left that God needed to do? Well, He had made the heavens and earth and everything in them. He had even decorated the sky with lights. The first man and woman were perfect, and they had all the food they could ever need as they lived in peace among the friendly animals. “God saw all that He had made, and it was very good” (Gen. 1:31). There was nothing else to be done, so “He rested on the seventh day from all His work” (Gen. 2:2).
