The articles "a" and "an" are indefinite articles and have the same meaning but they have different uses and meanings.

AN
- It's use only for the singular, in front of a countable noun when this is mentioned for the first time. With the plural nouns the article changes to some/any
- It is used in front of nouns that start with a vowel or semi-vowel sounds
- It is used to define an entire race of animals or people
- It is used to make a reference to a gentleman
The article "A"
- Same as the article "a", it is used only for the singular nouns and for the plural ones it changes to some/any
- It is used for nouns that start with a consonant or a silent H
- And again same as the article "a" it is used for talking about an entire race or talking to a gentleman
The article "an"
- "The" is a definite article that is used with countable and uncountable nouns
- In front of singular nouns
- In front of nationality adjectives
- In front of ordinal numbers
- In front of names of rivers, seas, oceans, mountains, but not in front of names of lakes
- It isn't used with Nations or possessive cases
