Pharmacokinetics

Medical uses

The principle pharmacological action of GTN is the relaxation of vascular smooth muscle. GTN produces, in a dose related manner, dilation of both arterial and venous beds

GTN works by widening blood vessel. This increases the blood supply to the heart, which gets more oxygen to the heart muscle in result reducing angina

Action of GTN

Indication & contra-indication

Glyceryl trinitrate GTN

A vasodilator that results in:

  • Dilation of coronary arteries
  • Dialtion of systemic veins
  • Reduced blood pressure

Administer GTN to any patient who has cardiac chest pain due to angina. Also, to a patient who has an acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema.

What is GTN?

Medically, GTN is a vasodilator that eases chest pain. Also, GTN is an important ingredient in dynamite and other explosives (TNT). Ascanio Sobrero a chemist that first discovered GTN in 1846. However he delayed revealing his discovery because of its explosive action.

Conclusion

Desired effect & side effects

GTN stands as a multifaceted compound with a rich history, serving both as a lifesaving medication for heart patients and a powerful tool in various explosive applications.

The purpose of GTN is to treat the symptoms of angina. However, there are side effects that come along with taking GTN including...

C3H5N3O9, Nitroglycerin is a nitroglycerol that is glycerol with nitro groups replacing the hydrogen atoms of all three hydroxy groups.

  • Angina is chest pain that happens when not enough blood gets to the muscles of the heart.
  • By widening blood vessels GTN makes it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body, so your heart muscles get more oxygen. Reducing the risk of getting angina
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Hypotension

Adminster GTN to any patient with chest pain due to angina, MI, or acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema. However DO NOT administer GTN to a patient with:

  • Hypotension (SP < 90mmHg)
  • Hypovolemia
  • Head trauma
  • Cerebral hemorrhage
  • Unconscious patient
  • If Sildenafil (Viagra) and other related drugs have been taken in the pervious 24 hours.

When GTN is taken it is then converted in the smooth muscle cells in the blood vessels to nitric oxide, which enhances the activation of cyclic GMP (Downstream effect e.g. vasodilation) in turn results in smooth muscle relaxation.
