THE AIRPLANE:THE INVENTION THAT MADE THE WORLD SMALLER
Presentation, Martina D'Amico,4CL
The airplane is one of the greatest technological breakthroughs of the 20th century that has truly transformed the world and everyday life.
But the plane is also the realization of the oldest dream of the human being: to fly
Info
Men have dreamt for ages of being able to fly like birds perhaps the first reflection on flight concerns the Greek legend of over 2,000 years ago "Icarus and Daedalus"
LEONARDO DA VINCI
A more thorough experimentation took place with Leonardo da Vinci, in particular, he left in his notes dozens of projects for flying machines, inspired by the study of the wings of birds, in which passengers would have to climb, pedal or move their arms, and so get up in the air.

AIRPLANE
it is equipped with an engine and fixed wings so they cannot move with respect to the body of the vehicle
before
for many centuries the inventors had been looking for ways to fly using the only form of energy available, that of muscles
was invented after 1870
they needed the combustion engine
Wright brothers mounted on their Flyer, the first plane
THE FIRST PLANE
It is 17, December 1903, when the two American brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright created the first vehicle capable of lifting off the ground and flying in a controlled way. That was a memorable day, because for the first time a human being flew on a mechanical vehicle.

THE THIRD FLYER
The brothers kept on working on this project, and in 1905 the Wright Flyer III, was able to operate controlled flights longer.
This time it was converted to carry a passenger. And in May 1908, mechanic Charles Furnas became the first air passenger in history.

After the Wright brothers' flight, it was a few more years before the airplanes were actually able to fly long distances. But already in 1909 Louis Blériot managed to cross the English Channel, between France and England.

THE FIRST CIRCUMNAVIGATION
APRIL 1924,4 planes set off from Washington USA with 8 army air service pilots to complete the first ever circumnavigation of the globe by plane.

- Air France
- KLM in the Netherlands

MILITARY DEVICES
Soon they began to be used for military purposes. Planes were used in war more or less from 1910, but it was during the World War I that they showed for the first time all their importance.
At first they were employed mainly for reconnaissance, and they weren't armed. Then some were equipped with machine guns and bombs and soon air combat began.
CIVIL USES
Until the First World War, aircraft were not reliable enough for regular passenger transport. From 1919 the aircraft become reliable enough to be used first for postal transport and then for passenger transport. There were the first regular transport services in Germany, France, Great Britain and the United States.

THE JET ENGINE
In order to increase the speed of the aircraft, they began experimenting with gas turbines and then jet propulsion
In order to increase the speed of the aircraft, they began experimenting with gas turbines and then jet propulsion
By the 1930s aircraft designers understood that it would be impossible to reach high speeds with this type of engine.
Passenger transport had a rapid and great development
