When did self portraits begin as an artform?

> A self portrait is a representation of the artist, in drawing, painting, sculpture, or other material, by the artist. > Early examples of self portraits began in Egyptian, Greek, and Roman times, but it wasn’t until the 15th century that they were regularly identified as the main subjects

Objectives:

Students will… Look at and discuss examples of self-portraits in art history. Look at examples of metaphors and symbolism in art. Apply their understanding of metaphors in art to their own work of art. Create a metaphorical self-portrait using mixed media.

Make it multimedia

If you want to include a video, copy the URL and paste it into the Insert tab in the Editor. You can activate options such as Autoplay, Loop, and Mute, depending on your preferences.

Metaphors in Art

Artists use objects and visual clues to express meaning. Sometimes the meaning is apparent, other times it may require research. For Japanese arrtist, Yayoi Kusama, pumpkins are representative of stability, comfort and modesty. She creates hundreds of pumpkins for sculptures and installations. How can you use metaphors in your works of art?

Make it interactive

Your content is good, but it‘ll engage much more if it’s interactive. Capture your audience's attention with an interactive photo or illustration.

Interactive. Visual. Wow.

With Genially templates, you can include visual resources to wow your audience. You can also highlight a particular sentence or piece of information so that it sticks in your audience’s minds, or even embed external content to surprise them: Whatever you like!

Do you need a figure for a self portrait?

> self portraits do not have to be a literal and realistic view of the artist. > How can you reflect yourself in a self portrait without including your face?

Animate your content and take it up a notch

Interactivity and animation can be your best allies when creating tables, infographics, or graphs that help provide context for the information and simplify the data in order to communicate it to your audience. We are visual beings and we find it easier to ‘read’ images than to read a written text.

  • Mirrors helped drive the increase of self portraits.
  • Self portraits were an easy way for artists to practice painting the human face without having to hire a model.
  • Artists would also insert self portraits in paintings as a signature for the work of art.
