Representations of the earth
Maps and globes are a representation of the Earth. There are different types of maps:
Atlas (book with different maps)
Wall map (on a flat poster)
Globe (model of the Earth)
Digital map (on the Internet)

Mapas y los globos terráequeos son representaciones de la Tierra. Hay diferentes tipos de mapas:

The Earth is divided by imaginary lines:
- AXIS: invisible line through the centre of the Earth (from the North Pole to the South Pole). - EQUATOR: Invisible line around the Earth, dividing the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.

It shows the main roads of a country.
It shows mountains, rivers, lakes, deserts...
It shows the borders of a country and its different regions.

A key tells us what the different colours, symbols and shapes on a map are.

La leyenda nos explica el significado de los diferentes colores, símbolos y formas que aparecen en el mapa.
compass
A compass shows the four cardinal points: North (N), South (S), East (E), West (W).
The needle is a magnet. The red part always points North.

Una brújula muestra los cuatro puntos cardinales: Norte (N), Sur (S), Este (E), Oeste (O).
La aguja es un imán. La parte roja siempre apunta al Norte.

scales
Maps can't show things the same size as in real life. The closer we get to things, the smaller the scale is.
Maps with a large scale show us smaller areas.
Maps with a small scale show us large areas.

Los mapas no pueden mostrar las cosas en el tamaño real. Cuanto más nos acercamos, más pequeña es la escala.
Los mapas con escala pequeña muestran áreas grandes.
Los mapas con escala grande, muestran áreas más pequeñas.

A plan is like a map of a room or building. It shows the size and position of the room, the furnitue, the doors, the windows...
What are these plans of?
PLANos
Un plano es un mapa de una habitación o edificio. Muestra el tamaño y la posición de habitaciones, muebles, puertas, ventanas...
¿De qué son estos planos?
street maps
A street map shows us the name and position of the streets in a town or city.
Street maps use symbols. The key tells us what the symbols mean.
mapa callejero
Un mapa callejero muestra el nombre y posición de las calles de una ciudad.
Estos mapas usan símbolos. La leyenda explica qué es cada símbolo.
