  • To talk about a completed action in a time before now, an action that started and ended in the past.
  • To explain habits of the past or repeated actions.
With the following words:yesterday, last year, this evening, last month, in 2021, 5 years ago, etc.

  • We use the past continuous to say that somebody was in the middle of doing something at a certain time.The action or situation had already started before this time but had not finished.
  • To explain habitual action that used to happen frecuently but no longer occurs. To show a past action that has been interrupted or just lasted for a while.
  • We can use the past continuous for the background of a story:
ej: The birds were singing, the sun was shining...
With time expressions: while, as, when, all morning/afternoon...

We often use the past simple and the past continuous together to say that something happened in the middle of something else:

  • Tom burnt his hand when he was cooking.
