ADDING/DROPPING LETTERS
H5 - SPELLING
In English, when you want to change the form of a word, you can either add a suffix or prefix or you can drop letters. When you add letters to a word, you are extending or modifying the original word. This process can change the word's meaning or function within a sentence.
Prefixes: these are added at the beginning of a base word and can also change the word's meaning.
Suffixes: Many added letters come in the form of suffixes, which are added to the end of a base word.
Contractions: These are a common form of dropping letters, where two words are combined, and some letters are omitted.
Informal Language: Dropping letters is frequently used in informal language and spoken conversation to make words flow more smoothly.
Connected speech: It is when we join, reduce, and drop sounds. I went on a trip with a friend of mine. We all had a great time on holiday in Italy in 2012. Save me a sit on the train. They will need to come in from out of town. She went out to asses the damage. Get out of here. Over and over and over.
A Surprise Party Jake and Lisa were plannin' a surprise party for their dear friend, Sarah, to celebrate her birthday. They wanted to make sure she'd be absolutely thrilled when she walked into their beautifully decorated home. Lisa had already baked a mouthwatering, triple-layer chocolate cake, and Jake was meticulously settin' up colorful balloons and streamers in the spacious livin' room. Jake: "Hey, Lisa, do we have enough balloons for the party?" Lisa: "I think so, Jake. I've got plenty of 'em." Later, when Sarah arrived: Sarah: "Wow, you guys! This is amazin'! I can't believe you threw this extravagant party for me."
A Day at the Beach Alex and Lily were eagerly headin' to the beach for a fun-filled day of sunbathin' and exhilaratin' swimmin'. They were packin' their sunscreen, beach towels, and even a colorful beach umbrella when Lily realized she had forgotten the picnic basket. Lily: "Alex, we forgot the sandwiches!" Alex: "No worries, Lily. We'll just grab some mouthwaterin' hot dogs at the beach." At the beach, they met their friend, Max: Max: "Hey, guys! How's it goin'? You brought the sunscreen, right?" Lily: "Yep, we've got plenty. We're all set for a day of sun and waves."
