Summary of Cristóbal Balenciaga

Balenciaga was founded by Cristóbal Balenciaga who was born on January 21, 1895, in Getaria, Spain. His dad died when he was very young so he was very close to his mother who worked as a seamstress. Working alongside his mother, he quickly gained an appreciation for the art of design. He didn't intend to have a career in the fashion industry until his mother was invited to be a personal seamstress for a person of nobility status known as Marquesa De Casa Torres. Marquesa was fond of a piece that Balenciaga made and offered him an apprenticeship in tailoring. Leading to him opening his first boutique in San Sebastián, Spain in 1919.

His boutique was a couture boutique meaning that he only makes customized one of one garmets such as dresses.

The New Age of Balenciaga

After Baleenciaga's death, a ton of new creative directors took over Balenciaga over the years trying to revive and innovate what Cristóbal has created. Some have failed like Michel Goma and Josephus Thimister, and some succeeded like Nicolas Ghesquière and Demna Gvasalia.

1. Michel Gomas

Nicolas saved blew everyone out of the water in the first few months of him being the new creative directer making some classic pieces like the gladiator boots and the city bag. in pursuit of new opportunities he ended up leaving Balenciaga in 2012.

Michel Gomas relaunched Balenciaga in 1987 but got criticized for abandoning Balenciaga's identity and failed to build upon Cristóbal's design language. He was replaces 5 years later by Josephus Thimister.

4. Alexander Wang

Josephus Thimister was very pasionae and excited about being the new creative director of Balenciaga. It turns out he was too excited that he ended up hosting a runway show where he played extremely loud music that caused a lot of people to walk out of the event. He was fired later on because of this.

For some reasons not explained in July of 2015, Balenciaga announced that they had mutually agreed to part ways despite Alexander's strong start and presentation of six collections.
