Learner variability is the norm
Option availability reduces learning barriers
How to recognize Learner variability in the classroom?
Students learn in different ways and pace from one another based on their characteristics, interests, needs, social and emotional states, and context. Learning design needs to cater to these differences.
In a classroom, there are no “average” learners. Students come to our classrooms with varied abilities, strengths, needs, preferences, backgrounds and experiences. This is known as “learner variability”
Mastery can be achieved by becoming an expert at learning, i.e., by learning how to manage one's strengths and challenges to meet learning goals. Developing 'expert learners' should be at the heart of designing learning experiences.
Every child can be an expert learner. Expert learners know “how” they can learn and understand their own learning needs and strengths. Expert learners are students who are self-aware and are able to guide their own learning experiences.
Barriers to learning are when students ‘get stuck in a lesson or activity’. Careful planning and design can predict and reduce some of these barriers. educators can provide multiple engaging options for learning activities within the curriculum to reach out to all students. Digital technology offers more options and flexibility to address learner variability
