Avatar Cell Analogy

The Avatar's House

The nuclear membrane is a double layer which holds the nucleus. It seperates the nucleus from the rest of the cell and also controls what goes in and out of the cell. The nuclear membrane in Avatar the Last Airbender would be the Avatar's house, because it protects him from invaders and can let people meet him.

Flying Bison

The golgi complex receives proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum, further processes and sorts them for transportation, and sends them to their destination. Appa is the Golgi Complex because he can fly, so he helps Team Avatar travel to many different places internationally.

The Avatar

The nucleoli is found inside the nucleus, and it's primary function is to produce and assmeble the ribosomes of the cell. It's also where the RNA genes are transcribed. The Avatar is the nucleoli because they are the most important individual in the world. Like how the nucleoli stores genetic information, the Avatar stories memories from the previous Avatars.

Momo

The lysosomes contain digestive enzymes that break down excess or damaged cell parts, as well as destroy invading viruses and bacteria. Momo is the lysosomes because he can eat all the bad things the group doesn't want, and he can throw out things for the group.

Bags

The vacuole acts as a storage center for the cell. They store water and also contain waste products. An additional function of the vacuole is maintaining turgor within the cell. Travelling bags are like the vacuoles because they store different objects for people.

Guards/Gates

The plasma membrane, or cell membrane, protects the interior of a cell from the outside environment. It also transports nutrients into the cell and transports toxic substances out of the cell. In this analogy, the plasma membrane would be the guards/gates of the cities, because they protect everyone from invaders, and also let people in and out of the city.

Shops

Ribosomes bind mRNA and tRNA to synthesize proteins, which play critical roles in the body. In fact, they are even called the building blocks of life. The shops are the ribosomes because they provide goods for everyone, like how the ribosomes make proteins for the cell.

Canoes

The Smooth ER doesn't have any ribosomes. It is responsible for transporting proteins to the golgi complex (locally). It also is reponsible for synthesizing and moving lipids. Canoes are the Smooth ER because they help people travel, but not very far. Canoes also help people get fish/food, which is necessary for the body.

Team Avatar

The nucleus is the control center of the cell. The nucleus has many extremely important functions, like controlling the genetic information of the cell. Another major function of the nucleus is that it stores the DNA, RNA and ribosomes. The nucleus of the show are the main characters, "Team Avatar". They are the nucleus because they are trying to maintain peace between everyone.

The World Of Avatar

The cytoplasm is the jelly-like liquid that fills the interior of a cell. It's responsible for holding the contents of the cell and protects them. Avatar the Last Airbender is set in a fantasy world. This fantasy world is like the Earth, so the cytoplasm would be the "Earth".

Architects

The centrioles are responsible for organizing the microtubules which serve as the skeletal system of the cell. They also help in the formation of spindle fibers, which help with cell division. The centrioles would be the architects, because the architects are responsible for constructing buildings and infrastructure in the city.

Hills/Mountains

Microvilli are tiny fingers/bumps on the surface of many types of cells. They increase the surface area of the cell, and help for more efficient absorption of nutrients. The microvilli would be the hills/mountains or free land in this world, because they increase the surface area and provide more space for people to live.

The Goverment/Monarchs

The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. It generates ATP, which is used throughout the cell as a source of energy. Without the mitochondria, we would not survive.

]The government and monarchs are the mitochondria because they power everything that is going on in the cities, and without them, nothing would function. There would also be chaos in the cities if the monarchs weren't there.

Monorail (train)

The rough ER has ribosomes on it, which are responsible for making proteins. It's also responsible for the quality control and dispatch of proteins. The monorail is the Rough ER because is transports people to different places in the city.

City Borders/Walls

The microtubules determine the shape of the cell. They also control the seperation of chromosomes during mitosis, which is a type of cell division. The City borders/walls are the microtubules because they act as a transportation system and also seperate the world into different cities and places.
