Would rather
For specific preferences
"Would rather" is used to say that one person would prefer another or others to do something, to indicate what one wants or prefer to do.
Would rather is followed by an infinitive verb (without to) and than

Example: I would rather read the news paper than watch the news.
Would prefer
For specific preferences
"Would prefer" is used to say what somebody wants in a specific situation (not in general)
Would prefer is followed by an infinitive verb (with to) and rather than. And also followed by a noun
Example: 1. Would you prefer to drink tea or coffe? 2. I would prefer coffe rather than tea, please.
