USE OF "LET'S"

START

“Let’s” is a contraction of “let us” and it is based on the verb “let” which means to allow or give permission.

It is used to make suggestions to do something including ourselves in the action.

Let’s + verb (Let us)

  • Let’s go to the movies.
  • Let’s talk about it.
  • Let’s play a game.
  • Let’s have a break!
  • Let’s go outside.
  • Let’s jump rope.
  • Let’s play tag.

We can use the full form “let us” in very formal situations such as political documents, speeches, religious and other ceremonies; as well as, when making a request on behalf of oneself and another person.

  • Let us postpone the matter.
  • Let us know the progress.
  • Let us remember the victims of
this conflict.

NEGATIVE FORM

“Let’s not” is the most common if you are suggesting that you and another person should not do something.

Let’s + not + verb (Let us)

  • Let’s not talk about that.
  • Let’s not waste time.
  • Let’s not argue about money.

We can use the full form “let us not” in very formal situations.

  • We must forgive, but let us not forget.
  • Let us not break the rules of the company.
  • Let us not speak lies, only the truth.
