Cognitivism focuses on how students receive, organizer and retain information, its major belief is that the human brain is like a processor. Major theorist associated with cognitivism are Maria Montessori, Jean Piaget, and Lev Vygotsky. Memory plays a role in cognitivism because the learner is able to make connections to what they have already learned and apply it to new information and cognitivism enhances long-term memory (Main, 2022). According to cognitivism learning occurs when it is purposeful and focused, and is self-directed. The curriculum must be sequenced and be in context of what is being taught. In the classroom visualization are helpful and active participation in learning and opportunities for problem solving.

Behaviorism focuses on how students learned and is centered around the idea that all behaviors are learned through interactions with the environment. Major theorist associated with Behaviorism are B.F. Skinner, John B. Watson, and Ivan Pavolv. A major characteristic of behaviorism is shaping one’s behavior in response to stimuli, this good be positive or negative behaviors (Cherry, 2022). Memory plays a role in behaviorism because as student repeat behaviors they learn which behaviors or actions are accepted or no accepted. According to behaviorism learning occurs when through positive and negative reinforcement, modeling, shaping, and cueing. Behaviorism models a step-by-step learning process and is organized by curriculum. In the classroom learning happens through direct instruction and using positive reinforcements such as rewards are very beneficial.
Constructivism focuses on connecting preexisting knowledge to new information being taught (Guy-Evans & Mcleod, 2023). It involves task that include solving problems using critical thinking skills, creative thinking, and discovery. Major theorist associated with constructivism are Jean Piaget, Jerome Bruner, and John Dewey. Memory plays a role in constructivism because the learner must use previous learned material and combine it with newly learned material. According to constructivism learning occurs when activities are student centered, students are collaborating with one another, and it is hands-on with critical thinking built in.
