The island is located in the mouth of the Hudson river between Jersey city and New York City. Today the natural part belongs to NY and the historical part yo Jersey City.

. - initially a military base: Fort Gibson - 1892 : immigrant centre - 12 millions of immigrant have been through the island - only 8 million ended up in America
