What is LAAPFF?

The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival is an annual film festival hosted by Visual Communications, that uses its platform to have a voice for Asian American and Pacific Islander filmakers that inspire their community with challinging perspectives and empowering communities (vcmedia). To first understand LAAPFF we have to understand who founded it and why it was created. LAAPFF was created by Visual Communications (VC), a nonprofit organization that strives for accurate portrayals of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities in America. VC was founded by Duane Kubo, Robert Nakamura, Alan Ohashi and Eddie Wong. Since its founding in 1983 the festival has been able to provide over 5,000 films and work on reaching the goal of empowering and causing engagment amongst the Asian/PI communities.

1983

This year was when the first annual LAAPFF was first held, by Visual Communications. The festival was hosted in Japan America Theatre in Los Angeles, which was a breand new theatre in Little Tokyo (vcmedia). It consisted of 20 films in this theatre. This first edition condsisted of many fun suprises, such as screenwriter and film producer Stephen Ning hitchhiked from NY to LA and showed up unnanounced to his own screening during this fest and much more (vcmedia). The picture on the right shows Stephen Ning himself at the festival shaking hands with Visual Communications staff producer Amy Kato (vcmedia). This first screening was just to showcase Asian films to the audience hosted by VC.

1994

This year, they covered a lot on Korean cinemas at the festival. Korean film maker Park Kwang su showed off his work in this festival and also had a feature from Zhang Yuans production Beijing Bastards and Wang Xiaoshuis The days (vcmedias). Starting off the festival, they showed the screening of Flower Drum Song. In this picture it shows Clara Law, a Hong Kong director showing off her last screening Tempatation of a Monk (vcmedias).

2004

This was the 20th year for the film festival. This year, the California Arts Council and government dollars for arts programming was decimated. Not only that, but this year was considered a down year for Asian Pacific American Film, and was had a more international sense around it (vcmedias). Despite the odds against this festival, the festival was held for 8 days and featured an outstounding 181 film and video works (vcmedias). The opening screening featured a film we went over in class, which was Chan is Missing.

2014

2014 marked the 30th annual year of holding the LAAPFF. This year basically featured a new generation of film makers to the festival and promoted their films in the screenings. The featured new filmmakers included "Esy Casey (JEEPNEY), Steven de Castro (FRED HO’S LAST YEAR), Ursula Liang (9-MAN), and Masahiro Sugano (CAMBODIAN SON)" (vcmedias). The festival was granted aid provided by Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (vcmedias), and featured a tribute to Sessue Hayakawa who was a famous Japanese actor that featured in movies such as After Five, Nogi the Secret Sin etc. (wiki sessue)

2022

This festival was held just last year, and this marked the annual 38th year of the LAAPFF. This festival ended accumulating 150 films of Asian Pacific film makers, and featured a lot of award winning film makers such as Andrew Ahn, Gregg Araki, Shonali Bose, Lino Brocka etc. This year was featured a lot of funders such as Union Bank, Kaiser, HBO Max, and many more that support the festival.
