Halloween

Halloween is a popular holiday for being scary. With various traditions such as costumes, decorations of houses, the characteristic figures of this celebration and the most adored by children sweets. This feast takes place on 31 October the day before, for the Christian peoples, the day of All Saints.

Origin

Samhain, a Celtic festival, is the origin of Halloween. Studies conducted by historians indicate that Halloween probably arose from a festival practiced by the Celts, people who inhabited the British Isles (Ireland) and practiced a pagan religion centuries before the penetration of Christianity in the region.

Traditions - Costumes

It's common to wear costumes, whether it's for scary or cute fantasies, and regardless of age. But where did this come from? It was believed that on that day the dead rose and seized the bodies of the living. For this reason, costumes were used and the party was full of dark artifacts with the main purpose of defending themselves from these evil spirits.

Traditions - Trick or treat

When children dress up and walk around the neighborhoods asking for sweets, they use the famous phrase Trick or Treat. The word Trick in this expression refers to the act of making a joke with someone. Usually, a bad joke. Treat in this expression is "sweets". The "Treat" are not lunch boxes, figs, nuts, as happens with us in Portugal. In the United States are simply sweets(gummies and chocolates).

Traditions - Pumpkins

The pumpkins are the focus of everything. They do pumpkin festivals, pumpkin contests, pumpkin races, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin donuts, pumpkin pies, pumpkin soups, pumpkin cakes, pumpkin beers, anyway... Whatever you can imagine being done with pumpkin, they do. In addition, almost everyone decorates the houses and gardens with pumpkins and it is also very common to makethe famous "Jack-o'-Lantern".

Traditions - The decoration of houses

The decoration of houses in the United States during Halloween is truly amazing. The scarier the better. Everything is taken very seriously this season, so there are competitions, among people in the same neighborhood, to know which was the most scary house that year.

Traditions - Mystical creatures

The main mystical creatures of this party are:

  • Ghost
  • Mummy
  • Zombie
  • Vampire
  • Witch

Traditions - Movies

Movies that are well-known include:

  • Scream
  • Halloween
  • Family Adams
  • Annabelle
  • Chucky
