  • Water pollution is the contamination of water sources by substances which make the water unusable for drinking, cooking, cleaning, swimming, and other activities. .
Meaning

CAuses

What are the cause of water pollution ?

Rubbish and faecal water dumping

Water is uniquely vulnerable to pollution. Known as a “universal solvent,” water is able to dissolve more substances than any other liquid on earth. It’s the reason why water is so easily polluted. Toxic substances from farms, towns, and factories readily dissolve into and mix with it, causing water pollution.

The UN says that more than 80% of the world's sewage finds its way into seas and rivers untreated..

Maritime traffic

Much of the plastic pollution in the ocean comes from fishing boats, tankers and cargo shipping.

Fuel spillages

The transportation and storage of oil and its derivatives is subject to leakage that pollutes our water resources.

Industry, agriculture and livestock farming

Chemical dumping from these sectors is one of the main causes of eutrophication of water.

Effects

Human effect:

* Health

- Diseases spread by unsafe water include cholera, giardia, and typhoid.

* Economic

Creature effect:

- costs a lot to treat polluted water -> econimic degradation.

  • Death of marine animals.
  • When water pollution causes an algal bloom in a lake or marine environment, the proliferation of newly introduced nutrients stimulates plant and algae growth, which in turn reduces oxygen levels in the water. This dearth of oxygen, known as eutrophication.
  • Marine ecosystems are also threatened by marine debris such as plastic bags and soda cans..

IProblem
