La sua esistenza fu infatti prevista teoricamente da Urbain Le Verrier e John Adams in base alle perturbazioni indotte sull'orbita di Urano

L'unica sonda spaziale ad aver visitato Nettuno è stata la Voyager 2, nel 1989
