Caution! Linguicism happens every day

Where can I find it?

Practically everywhere. Yes, everywhere.

How is it expressed?

It is sometimes "hidden" behind phrases like "hablá bien". It can also be found in phrases that pretend to be objective but just correct your grammar or pronunciation.

How can I challenge it?

By analysing the way you think about other languages or varieties. By reading and sharing info. By not reproducing wrong ideas about languages and the supremacy of one over others.

What is it?

Linguicism happens when we discriminate against another or others who speak in a certain way or use a certain language. Juan Carlos Moreno Cabrera defines linguistic discrimination as the actions taken towards languages or varieties based on the idea that they can be classified according to differences. This classification then creates the false idea that a particular language or variety is superior.

Moreno Cabrera, J. C. (2016). La dignidad e igualdad de las lenguas. Crítica de la discriminación lingüística. Madrid: Alianza Editorial. Prólogo y capítulos 1 y 19, pp. 15-20; pp. 231-234.

Who is affected by it?

All of us are affected by linguistic discrimination. Marginalised groups and people who don't speak the standard variety may be "easier" targets.

Why should I care about it?

Because it affects you. We should all be aware of it so we can create safe environments for people to communicate. There's no scientific evidence that one language or variety is better than others.
