01. Early Career

Brown was a lecturer of politics at the Edinburgh College of Technology, From 1980, he worked as a journalist at a Scottish newspaper. He later became the current affairs editor.

Election to Parliament

Brown was finally elected to Parliament after his second attempt, in the 1983 General Election. He become the constituency MP for Dunfermline east.

Brown was elected Prime Minister in the 2007 Labour Leadership Elections, triggered by the resignation of Tony Blair.

Brown was invited to form a new government, of which he did on the 28th June 2007.
Brown inhertied the Labour Party which had a majority in the HoC, which will be the case until 2010.

02. Chancellor of the Exchequer

Brown became Chancellor under Tony Blair's government.
His Chancellorship started when Blair came into power, and subsequently ended after Blair's resignation.
He became Britain's longest serving Chancellor, of 10 years, 1 month, and 25 days.

In 2009, Gordon Brown faced a crisis after a critical advisor, Damian McBride, resigned, and the Conservative Party threatened legal action over explosive leaked emails. The emails were about how senior Conservatives, including David Cameron and his wife Samantha, could be targeted with smears about their private lives.

Gordon Brown was accused in 2009 of misappropriating funds after paying his brother Andrew $10,000 to clean his Westminster flat.

In the spring of 2009, a political scandal erupted involving the widespread misuse of expense accounts by members of Parliament, including members of Gordon Brown’s Cabinet. This led to the resignation of several members of Brown’s Cabinet and a major Cabinet reshuffle.

Time as Chancellor

During his time as Chancellor, he steered the British economy during a period of sustained expansion. His decision to make the Bank of England independent, which some may say deviated us from a second Great Depression. Inflation remained low, and the standard of living remained high.

Gordon Brown was a key figure in the formation of New Labour, the party we now know today.

As Prime Minister

Brown made various improvments to the NHS; tackled inequality; and promoted new policies for climate action.

Labour's Support

During his premiership the support for the Labour Party dropped, therefore allowing the Tories to make a comeback under Cameron.

Critical Issues

Critics say Brown failed to address critical issues facing the UK at the time of his premiership, like the ailing economy; resolve party and political problems and scandals; and preventing the decline of the Labour Party.

Overall, the premiership of Brown wasn't anything special compared to Prime Ministers before and after. He managed to stablise the economy during an uncertain period, and made a focus on reducing inequality across the UK.
