Subtle totalitarianism
The term ‘totalitarian’ has been widely used by Trump’s opponents as a critique of his presidency, as well as by the president and his supporters.
Classic theories of totalitarianism in the 1950s centred on fears of state control, while in the 21st century generally focuses on methods of internal psychological manipulation.
The idea of a radically intrusive state’ which attempts not just to control ‘citizens from the outside but also to reach into the most intimate regions of their lives’ and make them incapable of challenging the rule of the state’.
Direct totalitarianism: What is it?
Classic totalitarianism theorists tried to identify a new type of insatiably aggressive and repressive state that emerged in the middle of the twentieth century, based on the shared characteristics of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. It is clear that totalitarianism now has a much wider meaning and is carried out most of the time subtly, in a way we don’t even recognize. However, there are governments (such as Russia and China) that made it more evident than others through censorship and authoritarian systems and it is a direct totalitarianism.
Trump Attacks 'Cancel Culture' - But Tried Recently To Cancel These People
In his speech at Mount Rushmore, speaking of the "evil people" on the left, Trump said that "one of their political weapons is 'cancel culture', that is driving people from their jobs, shaming dissenters and demanding total submission from anyone who disagrees. This is the very definition of totalitarianism, and it is completely alien to our culture and our values, and it has absolutely no place in the United States."
Trump criticized Cancel Culture when he was the first one that wanted to fire employers and workers if they were doing not convenient actions in his opinion. So, a totalitarian who condemned others to be authoritarian, for many is such a hypocrisy
A government where there is no right to rebel !
“Sexual intercourse was to be looked on as a slightly disgusting minor operation, like having an enema. This again was never put into plain words, but in an indirect way it was rubbed into every Party member from childhood onwards.”
Both governments have increasingly dismissed any internal dissent and rights to citizens to preserve their authority.
For example, Russia has interfered in foreign elections, including the 2016 U.S. presidential election, through online disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks. Meanwhile, China’s state-owned media organizations have transmitted information that was always convenient for their own government

However, there are major differences that shape their foreign policy goals and the tools they use to pursue them.
Overton window
The Overton window is an approach to identifying the ideas that define the spectrum of acceptability of governmental policies. It says politicians can act only within the acceptable range. Shifting the Overton window involves proponents of policies outside the window persuading the public to expand the window.
