Why should I care about what you're saying?
Metadiscourse
What is metadiscourse?
What do we remember from what we've already seen?
"[M]etadiscourse can be conceptualised as a rhetorical strategy used by speakers and authors to talk about their own talk (Chrismore 1989: 86). This is essentially a functional/discourse-oriented as opposed to a formally-oriented view."(Tamsin Sanderson, Corpus, Culture, Discourse. Narr Dr. Gunter, 2008)
"Metadiscourse reveals the writer's awareness of the reader and his or her need for elaboration, clarification, guidance and interaction. In expressing an awareness of the text, the writer also makes the reader aware of it, and this only happens when he or she has a clear, reader-oriented reason for doing so. In other words, drawing attention to the text represents a writer's goals relative to an assessment of the reader's need for guidance and elaboration."(Ken Hyland, Metadiscourse: Exploring Interaction in Writing. Continuum, 2005)
How many times have you seen this, more or less, on your writing....

Long says: "Metadiscourse is important because it allows us to give direction and relate the various parts of our essay to each other and to the whole."The first person voice is particularly useful when you’re distinguishing your ideas from those of others (they say/I say):
Some takeaways
Metadiscourse is language addressed to your reader, to help them understand your contribution to what you've written about.
What is it?
- To distinguish your ideas from your sources
- To shift between parts of your argument
How do we do it? Use "I"
To give readers direction and to connect the parts of your essay
How can we use it?
