The Victorian Age

The Victorian Age, a period defined by the nearly 64-year reign of Queen Victoria, was one of the most fascinating periods in British history, witnessing progress in science, industry and technology as well as a rapid expansion of the British Empire and the wealth of the nation. At the same time, however, It brought problems of overcrowding, poverty and vice.

The Queen Victoria

Victoria was devoted to her husband, the couple had nine children and 42 nephews.Victoria restored the reputation of the monarchy, dimmed by her royal uncles and shaped a new role for the Royal Family through her civic duties and profound understanding of her constitutional role.
The young Victoria ascended to the throne at the age of 18 on the death of her uncle William IV. She was inexperienced at first but found support in her Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. In 1840 she married her cousin, Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, to whom she gave the title of Prince Consort.

Melancholic childhood

Victoria's unhappy childhood had been plagued by the systematic attempts of her mother and her mother's personal secretary, John Conroy, to bully her into compliance and dependency. She refused to make her mother Regent and banned Conroy from her presence. It must been a heady victory for an 18-year-old. The lesson Victoria took from this, however, was a double-edged one. On the one hand, it gave her confidence; on the other, it planted a conviction that only got stronger with age, that she was always right, especially when she was completely wrong

Succession:

Queen Victoria was only at the 5th place for the succession -in 1820 she became the third -in 1830 the second. Finally in 1838 she became Queen.

Marriage and children

In 1836 she met her first cousin Albert of Sassonia with whom she fell instantly in love. A curiosity about their marriage is that the proposal didn’t start by Albert, but by the queen Victoria herself, because she belonged to a higher social class.
Before that moment the brides haven’t ever wore a white dress, because was usual to wear a light blue dress that symbolised innocence and purity. After 9 month of marriage was born the fist of nine kids although she didn't like to be pregnant and breastfeed her babies.

Husband and secret lover

At Albert’s death Victoria invented a new tradition, wear the black colour during all the mourning period. Despite queen husband’s death the maid had to prepared the king’s room and his sleeping clothes every night until the queen’s death. Some of the letters that the queen wanted with her in her coffin were written by one of her closest friend John Brown who sometimes has seemed more than just a friend. Seem that the letters they wrote each other were very intimate and that described a deep relationship.

Buckingham Palace:

Victoria has been the first queen to established at Buckingham Palace although she travelled a lot thought Scotland to Wight island.

A particular funeral

A number of mementos from her extended family, friends and servants were buried alongside her. On one side was placed one of Alberto's dressing gowns together with a plaster cast of his hand, while on the other side was placed a lock of John Brown's hair and a photo of him, memorabilia carefully hidden from the family by a bouquet of flowers placed in front of the left hand. Furthermore, she wanted with her a cloak embroidered by Princess Alice, her daughter, for her father Alberto. The jewels that accompanied Queen Victoria were John Brown's mother's wedding ring, given to her by the man in 1883 on his deathbed, worn next to Prince Albert's wedding ring.

The golden jubilee

Queen Victoria's golden jubilee is the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of her accession to the throne. It is preceded by the silver jubilee and followed by the diamond jubilee. In the history of the British Isles only six monarchs have reached fifty years of reign and only three have had a real celebration, including Queen Victoria. It was celebrated with large public parades.

Curiosities about the Queen :

WRONG FINGER

HEMOPHLIA

On her coronation day, Queen Victoria wore white satin and red velvet. The Archbishop of Canterbury put a ring on her wrong finger and it took about an hour to remove it, in a ceremony that already lasted 5 hours.
A healthy carrier, she passed the disease on to at least three of her children, one of whom was a sick male and two certain carriers who passed it on to their royal lineage of princes and princesses scattered throughout Europe.

VICTORIAN CONDOMS

In 1887, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s coronation, condoms depicting the Queen’s portrait were developed. So it was that the austere face of the most puritan ruler ever found itself imprinted just where she would least wish.
