Physical Technology Project
My students are in the middle of the school year. This project was created to present how much the students have learned with the use of their research skills.
Subject Grade: 2nd Subject Area: Computer Science
ISTE Standard
1.3 Knowledge Constructor
1.3a Effective Research Strategies
Students plan and employ effective research straegies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits

Technology consists of hardware and software. For this project, we will be focusing on the physical components of technology, often called Hardware. Think about the devices that you use throughout the day - when you are relaxing and watching TV, playing a virtual game, or listening to music. Each of these devices is made up of physical elements. Even technology that you do not use every day, but have seen on the internet is composed of physical components. Think of these devices as you build your project.
Task
Understanding the Project
- Choose 5 hardware components to talk about and their uses
- Create a list of the cost of each of these components
- Presentation must be a max of 3 minutes long

Presentation
How to Start
Students will choose five physical pieces of technology. It could be a part of a computer or its own component. They will be given roughly two days to gather their research about their devices and the prices. Students are given one week to complete their projects and present them.
They will use Prezi, a presentation tool, to create a presentation that organizes all of their research. This presentation should include:
- Participants names
- Names of their five technologies
- The uses/capabilities of these technologies
- The price of each technology
- Images
- A conclusion slide to wrap everything up
After presentations are completed, students/groups will present their projects in front of the class. Each student/group has a maximum of 3 minutes to present their projects. Students will then turn in their student reflection paragraph papers.
Student Choices
Although this project has a few requirements, students are given multiple opportunities to make their own choice.
- Students can choose whatever 5 hardware devices they want to talk about
- Students can organize/design their presentations their own way
- Students can choose to work in a group or individually
Student Inquiry
This project is a research-based assignment.
Students can use any type of resource.
- Books
- Websites
- The example provided by the teacher
- Classmates
- etc
Collaborations and Teamwork
Students have the choice to work in a group

Teacher Coaching and Feedback
As the teacher, I will be available for any questions or concerns that the students have. If they want feedback on their project, I will provide that to them, without completely taking over or criticizing everything. I will guide them if they are lost and get them back on track if they get distracted.
Student Reflection
Students will be asked to write a paragraph reflection, at the end. They will write thier paragraph on a blank piece of paper and turn it in after their presentation. These are some questions that students should think about when writing their paragraph.
- Did they learn about new pieces of technology?
- What devices did they know already?
- What aspects of this project did they like/dislike?
- Did you think the project was successful, if not, what will you do the next time to avoid those obstacles?
Public Presentation
Students will be given a max of 3 minutes to present their projects. Talk about the devices that were picked and their abilities. At the end of the presentation, students can ask if there are any questions or comments regarding their project. Public presentations will teach other students new technologies they did not pick. It will also give students the experience of speaking in front of a large crowd (their fellow classmates).
The Use of Technology
Students will use the presentation tool, Prezi, to create a presentation using the research that they have gathered on their five technologies.

Conclusion
This project is designed to allow students to do their own research on hardware. They will use their organization skills and creative thinking to create a presentation that includes all of their research. Students will then present their projects to the class. By presenting to a large group, students will gain public speech experience and present their work to fellow classmates. Students are also asked to write a paragraph about their personal reflection on this project. This will allow myself and students to figure out what went right/wrong with the project, and can be used for future reference.
