Binary salts

  • NaCl: sodium chloride
  • FeCl3: iron (III) cholride
  • KI: potassium iodide.
Metal- non metal
  1. Identify the cation (metal).
  2. Determine the charge.
  3. Identify the anion (non-metal). .
  4. If there is more than one possible charge, use Roman numerals.
  5. Write the name of the anion with the "ide" ending.

Oxyacids

  • HClO4: perchloric acid.
  • H2SO4: sulfuric acid.
  • HClO: hypochlorous acid.
  • HNO2: nitrous acid.
Hydrogen- polyatomic ion with oxygen
  1. Identify the central element (it is the one with more oxygens attached). Write the name.
  2. Determine the charge (oxidation number).
  3. Add the prefix and suffix based on the oxidation number:
    1. per- -ic (highest)
    2. -ic
    3. -ous
    4. hypo- -ous (lowest)
    4. Add the word acid.

    Metal hydrides

    • AuH3 gold (III) hydride
    • PbH4: lead (IV) hydride
    • CrH3: chrome (III) hydride
    Metal- hydrogen
    1. Identify the metal.
    2. Determine the charge.
    3. If there is more than one possible charge, use Roman numerals.
    4. Write the word hydride after the metal.

    Oxysalts

    • CuSO4: copper (II) sulfate.
    • KNO3: potassium nitrate.
    • CaCO3: calcium carbonate.
    Metal- polyatomic ion
    1. Identify the cation (metal). Write the name.
    2. Determine the charge.
    3. If there is more than one possible charge, use Roman numerals.
    4. Identify the anion group (polyatomic ion).
    5. Write the name anion group.

    Metal oxides

    Example: Fe2O3

    • Metal: Fe: Iron.
    • Charge: +3
    • Iron (III)
    • Non-metal: oxygen: oxide
    • Iron (III) oxide

    Metal + Oxygen
    1. Name the metal.
    2. Determine the charge.
    3. If there is more than one possible charge, use Roman numerals.
    4. Write the metal's name and charge in parentheses.
    5. Name the non-metal.

    Hydroxides

    Metal- OH
    • LiOH: Lithium hydroxide.
    • Fe(OH)3: Iron (III) hydroxide.
    • Cr(OH)3: Chromium (III) hydroxide.
    1. Identify the cation (metal) and its charge.
    2. Write the name of the metal. If there is more than one possible charge, use Roman numerals.
    3. Write the word hydroxide.

    Non- metal oxides

    Example: CO2

    • Non metal: Carbon
    • Charge: +4
    • Carbon(IV)
    • Non-metal: oxygen: oxide
    • Carbon(IV) oxide

    Non- metal + Oxygen
    1. Name the non-metal.
    2. Determine the charge.
    3. If there is more than one possible charge, use Roman numerals.
    4. Write the non-metal's name and charge in parentheses.
    5. Write the word oxide

    Systematic nomenclature

    Non-metal oxides (anhydrides)
*Be careful: If the first element has one atom, we don't write "mono", only in the second. If you have "ao" or "oo", write only one "o".
    1. Name the first element using the full name.
    2. Write the word oxide.
    3. Use the prefixes to denote number of atoms*.

    Examples:N2O5 dinitrogen pentoxideCO carbon monoxide

    Hydracids

    Hydrogen +1 + non-metal
    • HCl: hydrochloric acid.
    • HBr: hydrobromic acid.
Chalcogen (group 16) or halogen (group 17)
    1. Write the prefix hydro and the name of the non-metal with the suffix "ic".
    2. Write the word acid.
