HABITATS

HOW DOES ESPS 6 APPLY?

what is it?

Areas with:

  • Large proportion of nonnative species
  • Human activity has altered
    • Primary ecological functions
    • Composition of species

ESPS 6 applies to:

  • Modified habitat
  • With important value for biodiversity
Borrower will
  • Minimize impacts on biodiversity
  • Implement mitigation measures

NATURAL

HABITATS

HOW DOES ESPS 6 APPLY?

what is it?

Areas with:

  • Largely native species
  • If there is human activity, there is no substantial modification of:
    • Primary ecological functions
    • Combination of species

No significant conversion or degradation of natural habitats unless:

  • No viable sites in modified habitats
  • Interested parties are consulted
  • Mitigation hierarchy applies
    • Avoid
    • Minimize fragmentation
    • Restore
    • Offset
  • Demonstrate feasibility of achieving no net loss or net increase of biodiversity

CRITICAL

HABITATS

HOW DOES ESPS 6 APPLY?

what is it?

High biodiversity value, important for species

  • Critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable or near threatened
  • Endemic or restricted range
  • Migratory / congregatory
Areas
  • Unique or highly threatened ecosystems
  • Associated with key evolutionary processes
  • Legally protected or internationally recognized

No project will be implemented unless:

  • No alternatives in non-critical habitats
  • No adverse impacts on
    • Biodiversity values
    • Ecological processes
  • No net reduction in population of endangered or critically endangered species
  • Long-term monitoring plan
  • Comply with all regulations
In addition, Biodiversity Action Plan

LEGALLY PROTECTED OR INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED

HABITATS

HOW DOES ESPS 6 APPLY?

what is it?

Geographical space

  • Defined
  • Recognized
  • Dedicated
  • Managed
To preserve in the long term:
  • Nature
  • Ecosystem services
  • Cultural values

If a project affects these areas, meet requirements for critical habitats and:

  • Legally permitted development
  • Government-recognized management plans
  • Consult all affected parties
  • If necessary, additional programs to promote and improve conservation aims

EXAMPLES

  • IUCN Protected Area Management Categories I - VI
  • Sites in World Database of Key Biodiversity Areas
  • World Heritage sites designated on natural or mixed criteria
  • Ramsar Sites
  • Core areas of the World Biosphere Reserves
  • Areas on UN List of National Parks and Protected Areas
  • Sites meeting criteria of IUCN 2016 Global Standard for Identification of Key Biodiversity Areas
