Over Population Stations

Was Malthus Right?

Station 1: Thomas Malthus and Malthusian Theory

Station 3: Ester Boserup

Station 5: Neo-Malthusians

Station 2: Hans Rosling: ending poverty and population growth

Station 4: Malthus or Thanos?

Station 6: You Choose

Explaining population growth requires simplification, but not oversimplification. In this video, Hans Rosling explains why ending poverty – over the coming decades – is crucial to stop population growth. Only by raising the living standards of the poorest, in an environmentally-friendly way, will population growth stop at 9 billion people in 2050.

  • What is Rosling’s claim about overpopulation?
  • What data does he use to support this?

You Choose

Are we doomed? (Malthus, Thanos, Neo-Malthusians) Or is there hope? (Boserup, Rosling) Take a post it note and write which side you choose and explain your reasoning. Place your post it note in the designated place for your choice.

Who said it--Malthus or Thanos?

mark each statement on your paper in part 4 with either an “M” or “T” depending on who you think said the statement. (if you haven’t seen Avengers, this may be a little more tricky)

Esther Boserup was a famous agricultural geographer. Her theory is based on the premise that population growth is a positive force in agricultural innovation, that it drives technology forward. According to Boserup as a society develops and progresses it uses its agricultural land more and more efficiently.

Who was he and what was his theory?

We will all start at station 1 as a group by watching the first 8 minutes of the following video

While watching the crash course, take note, particularly on questions such as:

  • who was Malthus?
  • What was his theory?
  • What was this theory based on?
