Mr. Mitra is about to introduce some words to his students before going to the zoo. His students are excited. They want to see tigers, dolphins, hippos, and lizards!
Step 1: Introduce the Word
Alright alright! When we go, you're going to watch the animals and tell me about how they're acting. Tell me about their behavior. Do you know that word, behavior? Give me a thumbs up if you know it. Now, say it after me. Behavior. Be-hav-ior. Behavior.
Step 1: Introduce the Word
Say It
Step 1: Introduce the Word
At this point, Mr. Mitra asks a few different students to repeat behavior for him. He notices that his MLs pronounce the verb sounds in the word differently than he does, so he provides a small correction for them and asks them to repeat the corrected version.
Okay. Let me write it down here. B-E-H-A-V-I-O-R. I would like everyone to take out the vocabulary folder and write it down in your vocabulary note there. You will see your folder get thicker and thicker as we move through the semester!
Step 1: Introduce the Word
Write It
Step 1: Introduce the Word
Mr. Mitra spells out the word and encourages his students to write it down in a vocabulary notebook.
So, I could say, ‘Barking is normal behavior for a dog.’ Let me write that on the board. Okay, let’s read the sentence together. Barking is normal BEHAVIOR for a dog. Shaeeda, can you read the sentence out loud for us one more time?
Step 1: Introduce the Word
Read It
Mr. Mitra reads the example sentence together with his students, pointing to each word as he says it. He asks a few students to read the sentence out loud by themselves. Mr. Mitra makes sure that all of his students are able to pronounce the word correctly, both in its introduction and when repeating the word in a sentence. If students have difficulty pronouncing the word correctly, they will also have more difficulty assigning meaning to the word, storing it, and retrieving it later (Archer & Hughes, 2011).
