Lava Lamp

What happened?

  • States of Matter
    • 3 states of Matter
      • Solid
      • Liquid
      • Gas

Lava Lamp

What happened?

  • Density
    • Liquids are made up of different numbers of atoms and molecules. In some liquids, these atoms and molecules are packed together more tightly resulting in a denser or heavier liquid.
    • The heavier the object the more dense it is.
    • Water sinks and Oil floats

Lava Lamp

What happened?

  • Chemical Reaction
    • When the tablet hit the water it started to dissolve creating a gas called Carbon dioxide (CO2) which is the bubbling that you saw.
    • The bubbles carried the water up to the oil where it POPPED and then went back down again!

Floating Ghosts

Materials

  • Tissue (Kleenix) or Parchment Paper
  • Black Marker
  • Balloon
  • Scissors
  • Tape (optional)

Floating Ghosts

Procedure

  • STEP 1: Use the marker to create a Ghost by drawing on the Kleenix.
  • STEP 2: Cut out the Ghost
  • STEP 3: Blow up the Balloon. You can ask your caretaker for help.
  • STEP 4: (Optional). Tape the ghost to the table to hold it in place.
  • STEP 5: Take the balloon and rub it on your hair.
  • STEP 6: Hold the balloon over your ghost.
  • STEP 7: Watch what happens!

Floating Ghosts

What Happened?

  • When a latex balloon is rubbed against our hair or clothes, electrons are transferred to the balloon.
  • When the balloon is then brought close to the tissue paper, the negatively charged balloon pulls the positively charged protons in the paper toward it. This creates an attractive force, allowing you to lift the ghost with a touch of the balloon and make it dance.

Creepy Crawly Spiders

  • Step 3: Slowly pour your water on your plate. (I recommend pouring it slightly away from your spider and not on it. Caretakers can help if you need them).
  • Observe what happens .
  • Use a straw and gently blow at your spider(s). (OPTIONAL)

Creepy Crawly Spiders

What Happened?

  • Markers are made with ink, alcohol, and a plant-based resin that makes it stick to the plate or board.

Creepy Crawly Spiders

What Happened?

  • Ink is not too sticky so when you pour water onto your dry erase doodle, it not only holds its shape, but float too on top of the water.
