SIMPLE PRESENTPASSIVE
Simple present passive
- What is Active Voice?
- What is Passive Voice?
Active Voice
The subject of the sentence performs the action expressed by the verb, and the object receives that action. Subject-Verb-Object (SVO). Example: She (S) writes (V) a letter (O).
Passive voice
The object of the action becomes the subject of the sentence. The focus is on the recipient of the action rather than the doer. Object-Verb-Subject (OVS) Example: A letter (O) is written (V3) by her (optional agent).
Active Vs Passive
Active
Passive
- The present passive is used to describe an action or state in the present that is being performed on the subject.
- The subject is who receives the action, and the agent of the action is often not explicitly mentioned or is less emphasized
RULES
We use the passive when the subject is irrelevant
English classes are taught here every day. (WHO teaches the classes is not important within the given situation).
DON'T FORGET!
The agent is unknown. We don’t know who is the agent
The man who is believed to have stolen the bank must be brought to jail. (we don’t know who is the man)
