What is the meaning of this apostrophe (´s)?
We use ´s to express possession in English. It means "de".
1. This is John´s car. 2. It is James´s laptop. 3. Where can I find my teacher´s classroom? 4. This is my parents´ car. 5. That is my dog´s toy.
This is John´s car.
RULE: We use a proper name + ´s to express that something belongs to a person. John ´s car El coche de John
It is James´s laptop.
Rule: If the proper name ends in S, we add+ ´S to express possession. The pronunciation is /IZ/ James ´s laptop El portátil de James
Where is my teacher´s classroom?
We use a noun refering to a person + ´S to express that something belongs to someone. My teacher ´s classroom La clase de mi profesora
This is my parents´car.
Rule: If the noun is a regular plural , we only add+ ´ to express possession. My parents ´ car El coche de mis padres
That is my dog´s toy.
Rule: With animials, we add+ ´S to express possession. My dog ´s toy El juguete de mi perro
We ask the question: Whose + object + is/are + this/that /these/those? Whose bag is this/that? Whose books are these /those? OR
Whose + is/are + this/that /these/those+ noun Whose is this/that bag? Whose are these/those books?
We answer: Whose bag is this? It is Mary´s bag. OR It is Mary´s.
REMEMBER! "Who´s" and "whose" are pronunced the same: /hu:z/ Who´s that girl? - She is my sister Whose is this bag? - It´s Manolo´s bag. LET´S PRACTISE! Go to page 217 and do exercises a and b.
