TISSUES

Classification of Muscular Tissue Skeletal- Long cylindrical fiber, striated, many peripherally located nuclei. Cardiac- Short, branched, striated, single central nucleus Smooth- Short, spindle-shaped, no evident striation, single nucleus in each fiber

Cardiac Muscles occur in the walls of the heart. It contracts to propel blood through the blood vessels. It is under involuntary control.

STRUCTURE:-Cardiac cell is a branch-shaped cell. -Cardiac muscle has one nucleus per its cell. - Cardiac muscles are striated. -Cardiac muscles are branched and connected to one another by the intercalated disk, which gap junctions.

Cardiac Muscle

LOCATION: Mostly in the walls of the hollow organs.

Skeletal Muscle is the major components of organs called skeletal muscles, which pull on bones cause the body to move. It is described as being under voluntary control because one can purposely cause skeletal muscles to contract.

STRUCTURE: -Skeletal muscles are long, large cylindrical cells. -Skeletal muscles contain many nuclei per its cell. -Skeletal cells are striated or banded because of the arrangement of the contractile proteins within the cells.

Skeletal Muscle

LOCATION: Attaches to the bones or other connective tissues.

Smooth muscle forms the walls of hollow organs except the heart. It is responsible for number of functions, such as movement of food through digestive tract and emptying the urinary bladder. It generally acts to squeeze substances through these organs by alternately contracting and relaxing. It is under the involuntary action.

STRUCTURE: -Smooth muscles are elongated with tapered ends. -Smooth muscles contain one nucleus per cell. -There is no visible striation in this tissue.

Smooth Muscle

LOCATION: Mostly in the walls of the hollow organs.

Types of Muscle Tissues

What is a muscle tissue?

Muscular tissue performs the following functions: 1. It helps in movement and locomotion. 2. It supports the bones and other structures. 3. It is responsible for peristalsis.
