What do we learn about Jack?
  1. At first, Golding describes the beast as being a “snake-like thing”; what effect does this language have on the reader?
  2. What effect does it have on the other boys when it is suggested the Beast comes out of the sea?
  3. Why do you think Ralph is trying to convince the boys there is no Beast?
  4. When Simon says the Beast is “only us” what do you think he means?
  5. What sort of behaviour makes the boys seem beastlike?
  6. What does the Beast SYMBOLISE to the reader?
  7. How does the idea of the beast change over the course of the story? In your answer, refer to at least two quotations.
