What is it?
TPCASTT is a useful strategy for analyzing poetry. It stands for Title, Paraphrase, Connotation, Attitude, Shifts, Title (again), and Theme. Let's dive into each step and learn how to effectively analyze poems.
Step One:The Title
- Look at the title and make a prediction.
- What do you think the title means?
- What can we infer about the text?
Step 2: Paraphrase
- In this step, you need to paraphrase the poem. Break down the poem into smaller sections and restate the meaning in your own words. This will help you understand the literal message of the poem before diving into deeper analysis.
Step 3: Connotation
- Connotation refers to the emotional or cultural associations that words or phrases carry. Analyze the connotations of key words or phrases in the poem. Consider how these connotations contribute to the overall tone or mood of the poem.
Step 4-Attitude & Shifts
- In this step, you examine the speaker's attitude or perspective in the poem. Look for shifts in tone, perspective, or meaning throughout the poem. These shifts can provide important clues about the poem's deeper message or themes.
Step 5- Title (again) & Theme
- The final step of TPCASTT is to revisit the title and connect it to the overall theme of the poem. Consider how the title relates to the deeper meaning or message conveyed by the poem. Identify the central theme or themes that the poet explores.
