EMBRYOLOGY
ANYARA ZAPATA
Definition of Embryology:
The branch of biology and medicine concerned with the study of embryos and their development. Although embryology is specifically focusing on embryos, we will also be talking about fetal development.
"To be pro-life is to recognize the inherent value of every human being, regardless of their stage of development"~ Author Unknown *Warning Graphic Images Ahead*
Why this is important:
Many people fail to believe that human life is valuable and worthy from the moment that human life comes into existence which is conception. Because of this, 2,363 or more babies die every day because of abortion.
Stages of Embryonic Development
- Conception & Fertilization
- Blastocyst Development
- Blastocyst Implantation
- Embryonic Development
Embryo refers to age, not kind...
- There are all embryos, but not all of them are human
Conception- Life Begins
Light is created once conception happens, what a cool way to start life!

Conception vs Fertalization
Socially speaking, the term conception can be interchanged with the term fertilization, but medically, the term fertilization refers to the implantation process.
Blastocyst Development and Implantation
- Hours after sperm meets egg, the fertilized egg becomes a zygote because the cells are multiplying
- After 5-6 days that zygote becomes a blastocyst
- Cells needed to create the organs of the baby are present at this time
- Implantation still hasn't happened yet so ectopic pregancies can occur at this stage between 5-6 days after conception
Embryonic Development
- A few days after the baby is in the blastocyst stage, it becomes an embryo at around 10-12 days after conception
- At this point implantation has occured
- An embryo is an embryo from 10-12 days after conception until 12 weeks after conception or the first trimester after this point, the embryo becomes a fetus
Stages of Fetal Development
- This is by weeks
- The baby is an embryo until its becomes a fetus at 12 weeks
- The baby is a fetus until birth
- Every week there is growth in the fetus
Weeks 1-12
- Day 10 - All cells needed to develop into vital organs are present
- 21 days- Heart strings develop
- Week 5 - Heart fliker
- Week 6- Nose, mouth, ears, intestines start to form
- Week 7 - Arms and legs start to form
- Week 8 - Nerve cells, breathing tube, developing lungs
- Week 11 - Kicking, stretching & hicupping
- Week 12- Reflexes, open/close fingers and toes
Weeks 13-24
- Week 13 - Fingerprints, veins & organs
- Week 14 - Brain Impulses, kidneys work
- Week 15 - Sense light
- Week 17 - Move joints, skeleton hardening
- Week 18 - Flexing arms & legs
- Week 19 - Senses developing (may hear your voice)
- Week 20 - Baby can swallow
- Week 23 - Baby can pick up sounds
- Week 24 - Consciousness & Sentience
Weeks 25 - Birth
- Week 26 - Inhaling amniotic fluid which helps to develop lungs
- Week 27 - Brain is super active; sleeps and wakes
- Week 28 - Eyesight & blinking
- Week 34 - Central nervous system and lungs maturing
- Week 35- Kidney fully formed, liver process waste
- Week 39 - Baby is full-term
