Secondo le ricostruzioni degli storici, Carlo Magno possedeva una serie di animali esotici, con i quali ostentava la propria potenza. Si narra, infatti, che possedesse una serie di pantere, cinghiali, orsi e leoni; famoso il suo Leone di Marmorica, di cui il sovrano andava fiero.

Abū l-ʿAbbās

’l' animale fece subito colpo sugli abitanti, che da ogni regione si mettevano in viaggio per ammirarlo. Sempre Michel Pastoureau riferisce che nel Medioevo si pensava che gli elefanti fossero simili alle montagne, più intelligenti di un cavallo e misericordiosi nei confronti dei deboli.

Abul-Abbas era una vera superstar, al punto da avere un posto d’onore nel serraglio dell’Imperatore. Carlo Magno chiese che il suo “zoo privato”, diventasse itinerante, viaggiando insieme al suo padrone. Una richiesta che causò non pochi problemi al personale dell’Imperatore, perché già era stato difficile spostare l’elefante, figuriamoci un intero zoo. Abul-Abbas seguì il suo padrone in diverse battute di caccia, di cui l’Imperatore era un grande appassionato, nonché in due spedizioni verso la Germania. Si racconta che l’elefante morì durante la seconda spedizione, nell’810.

La “fame” del sovrano in fatto di animali “domestici” però non si arresta qui: Carlo magno ricevette un elefante albino asiatico in dono dal califfo Hārūn al-Rashīd. Il nome dell’elefante era Abū l-ʿAbbās e rimase al fianco del sovrano, che ne andava fierissimo, per circa dieci anni.

LA LEGGENDA Dalla morte del pachiderma è nata anche una leggenda. Il mito racconta che, per la grande tristezza, l’Imperatore ordinò di costruire attraverso una delle zanne dell’elefante un enorme corno da caccia, chiamato olifante. L’oggetto avrebbe fatto parte del tesoro dell’Imperatore. Gli archeologi hanno cercato per lungo tempo l’olifante di Carlo Magno, ma invano. Ci sono troppi corni pervenutici dall’Alto Medioevo e molti di questi sono stati spacciati per l’olifante dell’Imperatore da secoli. Sarà stata una leggenda, ma grazie a questa sappiamo della straordinaria amicizia tra Carlo Magno e il suo elefante.
