Theme vs. motif
All stories have repeating ideas or events. These are called Motifs.
Motif examples: Love Death Greed Hope
Motifs are essential to understanding themes
Motif is the an idea or event that reoccurs in the text.
Themes are built from motifs
But they provide lessons, morals, messages; hence, they are complete sentences. Often themes are represented through a universal lens.
Example
Theme-Don't judge a book by its cover.
Motif -judging
Universal themes
Little Red Riding Hood-Don't talk to strangers. Romeo and Juliet-People do foolish things when they are young and in love. Batman-Good overcomes evil.
- Themes are subjective
- Authors often develop multiple themes-there is rarely only one
- The theme is a message the author is trying to convey to the reader.
- It is very similar to central idea but central idea is related to nonfiction-themes apply to fiction
