TOPIC 1: THE ROLE OF VISUALS IN LANGUAGE LEARNING
03
In today's world, visuals are everywhere. We use them to communicate, learn, and express ourselves. We will explore the role of visuals in new literacy.
Communication: Visuals can be used to communicate ideas and concepts effectively. They can be more engaging and memorable than written text.
Learning: Visuals can help students learn in new ways. They can provide a visual representation of abstract or complex concepts.
Creativity: Visuals can foster creativity and expression. They can be used to express ideas or emotions in a unique way
Visuals can convey a message in a number of ways. They can:
- Illustrate a concept or idea.
For example, a diagram of the human heart can help students to understand how it works.
- Provide evidence to support a claim.
For example, a graph showing the decline in global bee populations can help to convince students that climate change is a serious threat.
For example, a series of images showing the stages of a butterfly's life cycle can help students to understand the process of metamorphosis.
- Elicit an emotional response.
For example, a photograph of a starving child can help to raise awareness of hunger and poverty.
Activity: Combining images using bright fun colors with spoken words.
1.The teacher provides students with a series of images and sounds.
2.Students create a storyboard that shows the relationship between the images and sounds.
3.Students present their storyboards to the class.

TOPIC 3: WHAT ROLE DO VISUALS PLAY IN THE NEW LITERACIES
05
It's important to highlight that...
Nowadays we are surrounded all the time by technology and the digital such as digital texts, where we can find images, pictures, videos, audios, etc.
Literacies have helped L1-speaking students and students exposed to L2 with their innovative activities realeted to visuals involve in the new literacies.
Opinions about literacies
Disadvantages?
Some universities, schools and institutes think that the use of technology or social media in our classes it's a bad idea since this new way goes against to the traditional pedagogy, which teachers continue to use without generating a change within educational institutions.
Carrington and Robinson (2010) argue that we need to recognize the informal learning networks which could be promoted by these and other digital technologies. They also say that young people need a parallel pedagogy' which helps students gain skills in both print and digital text.
"Print and digital literacies must come together to generate meaningful learning"
