1775-1783

Significance/Importance of Battle:

Lexington & Concord

1 year and 3 months before independance is declared the very first shots of the American Revolution are "heard around the world". Lexington refers to the arrest of Samuel Adams and John Hancock while Concord refers to the British heading to Concord to destory the weapons and ammunition the militia was storing there.

Outcome of the Congress:

Second Continental Congress

The second continental congress met in Philadelphia to form the continental army. The second continental congress then selected George Washington as leader of the newly formed continental army for his experience in the French and Indian War.

Remember the Ladies

Abigail Adams was an advocate for women's rights and equal political participation as well as equal opportunity for education. Republican motherhood brought up a new idea as women were called upon to teach republican values within the family. This gave them a new role of importance in politics.

Significance of the Declaration of Independence:

Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independance written in 1776. It listed complaints against King George the 3rd and the violation of colonial rights. Thomas Jefferson was the primary author and it was signed on July 4th. Natural rights were violated and the colonies wanted independance.

"The Crisis"

Impact of The Crisis:

"The Crisis" influenced colonials to support their troops, as they were volunteers slowly losing passion and desire to fight. This eventually gave soldiers confidence to continute fighting, which in turn changes the outcome of future battles (hint hint).

Battle of Saratoga

Significance of the Battle of Saratoga:

France was now forced and required to join the Americans in their fight for independence, as they were all captured due to a poorly executed plan (splitting army in half and flanking to North and South).

Valley Forge

Significance of Valley Forge:

The continental army resides here to gain intel from opposing British troops, though valley forge is very difficult to inhabit when low on supplies like clothing. Those harsh 6 months caused around 2000 soldiers to die of disease or other illness, further setting back the army's main goal.

Significance of the Battle of Yorktown:

Battle of Yorktown

With the excess naval military aid from the French, Washington and his army captured British General Cornwallis while attempting to flee via the York River. This inturn fuels their victory, and they inevetibly force the British Yorktown troops to surrender.

Explain what America gains:

Treaty of Paris, 1783

America gains independence from the British, and are privilaged land extending borders from The Mississippi river, canada, and spanish flordia. They were granted fishing rights along Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and each side would repay debts initially owed to eachother before the war. They are granted all property, including slaves, that were owned before the war.
