Lexington & Concord
The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first battles of the American Revolution. This was one of the first battles of the revolution referred to as: "The shot heard around the world". The war began April 1775, 1 year and 3 months before independence was declared.

Outcome of the Congress:
Second Continental Congress
The Sceond Continental Congress was the "acting government"; many delegates were afraid to seperate from England: sent Olive Branch Petition to King, but it was ignored. In 1775, they met in Philadelphia, PA to form the Continental Army. They also selected George Washington as the leader of the army because of his experience in fighting in the French and Indian War.

Remember the Ladies
Women in the Revolution- in response to women's participation in the Revolution- boycotts. Daughters of Liberty and Enlightenment ideals- women sought expanded roles in society and politics. Women were called upon to teach republican values within the family and granted women a new importance in American political culture.

Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was written in the summer of 1776, listing complaints agaisnt King George III and that he violated colonial rights. Thomas Jefferson was primary author and the document was signed July 4, 1776. Natural rights have been violated and the colonies wanted independence.

The Battle of Saratoga was a turning point of the Revolution; France was persuaded to join Patriot was efforts after this victory. This battle was the greatest victory for American forces and persuaded the French and Spanish to support America's fight for independence.

Significance of Valley Forge:
Valley Forge National Historical Park is nationally significant as the site of the 1777-1778 winter encampment of the Continental Army under General George Washington. It was a place of George Washington's men to rest and train for oncoming wars or battles. At Valley Froge, they also constructed over two miles of breastworks, 6 redans, and 5 redoubts.

Significance of the Battle of Yorktown:
Battle of Yorktown
In the Battle of Yorktown, Washington and Fr. General Jean Rochambeau marched land forces South to Virginia and trapped Brit. General Lord Charles Cornwallis in the peninsular town of Yorktown. With the assistance of the French naval fleet they trapped Cornwallis from fleeing the city via the York River. Washington, Rochambeau and the French fleet laid siege to the city and forced the British to surrender in October 1781.

Treaty of Paris, 1783
The Treaty of Paris in 1783 was what helped the US become independent. During this treaty, boundaries of the US extended west to the Mississippi River; border of Canada in the North and Spanish Florida in the South. The congress also recommended that the states give back any property taken from the Loyalists.
