Olio is a British startup that allows users to list and post photos of unused food products, enabling them to share them with others in the same neighborhood. The goal is to significantly reduce the food that would otherwise be thrown away. The idea originates from a bottom-up, community-driven approach, guided by individual behavior, and it's a way to limit the amount of food waste. Approximately one-third of the world's food production is wasted or allowed to expire. Olio also helps businesses address the issue by allowing retailers, operational events, and corporate cafeterias to use the Olio platform and community to become "zero food waste" organizations. How Olio Works: Businesses pay a commission, and in return, Olio sends its thousands of volunteers who have been screened and trained in food hygiene to visit their stores or outlets and collect unwanted food items. Volunteers then photograph and list the items on the app and offer themselves as local collection points. Most items are available for distribution within a few hours, and volunteers can keep up to 10% of the food they collect. Olio is also exploring the possibility of transitioning to a premium model where the platform's most active users pay a subscription that grants them access to additional features.
