What do Archaeologists Do?
Hollywood has convinced us that archaelogists like Indiana Jones travel the world looking for priceless treasures and facing dangerous booby traps! The reality is a little bit different but still very interesting! Archaeologists study the past by searching for and examining artifacts. These human made items are studied to understand how people throughout history lived.

Tikal is an Ancient Mayan site located in Guatemala. Archaelogists have uncovered many artifacts such as sculptures decorated with hieroglyphics that teach us about what life was like in one of the largest cities in the Mayan civilization.

One of the most famous archaelogical sites in the world, the Acropolis of Athens is an important part of Greek history. This site has been a home to kings, a citadel, a mythical home to gods and goddesses, a temple, and a tourist destination.

Think about archaelogists in the future!
Imagine an archaelogist 500 years in the future is excavating your hometown. What artifacts would they find that teach them about the year 2023? Look around your room and see what you can find!
Extension Activity: Can you identify another real world archaelogical site? What do the artifacts there tell us about that civilization?

What is a historical fact?
When studying history, sometimes it can be difficult to differentiate between a fact and opinion. A fact must be proveably true and supported by historical evidence! For example, we know that Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream Speech” on August 28, 1963. We know this because many people were there and witnessed this event. This event was documented in many ways, such as being recorded on video and reported in newspapers. The date in which this speech was given is a fact, with lots of historical evidence supporting it.

How can we spot an opinion?
An opinion is simply a judgement a person forms about something. These statements are not proveably true because they are based on preference. An example would be, the American Revolution was the single most important event in world history. Some people may believe this to be true and have reasons why, but others may think another event is more important and have their own supporting information! Sometimes it can be tricky to tell fact from opinion.

Someone says to you "Benjamin Franklin was the most influential president of the United States". What could we do to try to verify that this is a true historical fact?
