Having Good personal hygiene is important because it keep you and everyone around you safe. This also prevents foodborne illnesses from being born. It's essential in avoiding the spread of bacteria. One way to ensure good hygiene is to keep your hands clean whenever you can.

Wash Your Hands

To keep food from becoming contaminated it's important to wash your hands. Wash your hands before you start work and after touching anything that could contaminate food or the work area.

Steps:

  1. Wet hands with warm water
  2. Apply soap
  3. Scrub hands and arms for 10 to 15 seconds
  4. Dry hands with single use paper towel

What to do When Sick

If you're sick, you could spread and contaminate your coworkers and equipment. If sick don't come in to work.

  1. Vomiting
  2. Diarrhea
  3. Jaundice
  4. Sore throat with a fever

What to Wear

What you wear should always be clean and presentable. Dirty clothes carry germs and could cause foodborne illnesses.

What to wear

  1. Hair covering: Wear a clean hat when in the kitchen.
  2. Clothing: Wear clean clothes. Aprons, chef coats, uniforms, etc. Store dirty clothing away from food & food-prep areas.
  3. Jewelry: Remove all jewelry because it contains bacteria.

Wearing gloves and caring for your hands and nails is just as important as keeping them clean.

  1. Gloves: Don't touch ready to eat food without gloves. Only use single use gloves and wash hands before putting gloves on. Change gloves when they become dirty or get torn.
  2. Hands & nails: Keep fingernails short and clean. Don't wear nail polish or false nails.
