Cretaceous Period - From 145 Ma to 66 Ma

World

The Earth looked vastly different during the Cretaceous Period. There was a boom of flowering plant species, as well as higher ocean levels due to the increased temperature.

Details

Events

Bibliography

There are a few notable events which happened during this period.

Details

  1. There are 2 Epochs within the Cretaceous Period, being the Early Cretaceous and the Late Cretaceous
  2. Within each Epoch, there are multiple ages. Within the Early Cretaceous there are, in order of furthest time ago to earliest, the Berriasian, Valanginian, Hauterivian, Barremian, Aptian, and Albian ages. During the Late Cretaceous Epoch, there are the Cenomanian, Turonian, Coniacian, Santonian, Campanian, and Maastrichtian ages.
  3. Cretaceous gets its name from "Creta" which means "Chalk" in Latin. This is due to the large quantities of chalk which were formed in Western Europe during this time. (Osterloff)
  4. The first angiosperms had evolved from specialized group of ferns. (“Cretaceous Period—145.0 to 66.0 MYA (U.S. National Park Service)”)

FunFacts

Major events that occurred between 145 Ma and 66 Ma

One major event that occured during this period was the emergence of angiosperms, or flowering plants. The major event that nearly everyone knows about, although they might not know the name of, is the Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction Event. This was the exctinction event which wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs.

How was the Earth different 100 million years ago?

Towards the end of the Jurassic period and throughout all of the Cretaceous period, the continents were moving from Pangea into nearly where they are now.

The entire Earth was warmer, which lead to

  • higher ocean levels due to the ice caps being melted.
  • radically different plant life, being able to grow in temperate rainforests further north than they would be able to today.

These plants were mostly cryptograms at the beginning of the Cretaceous period but would later become more prominently angiosperms towards the end of the Cretaceous. (Osterloff)

Asides from the dinosaurs that lived during this period, there were also early birds which had evolved, as well small mammals.
