The pliocene epoch
The Pliocene Epoch lasted from 5.3 to 2.6 million years ago (though some sources state it ended 1.8 million years ago)
Most Notable Event of the Pliocene Epoch:During the Pliocene Epoch, we saw the first known hominids, or humanlike primates, evolve in eastern Africa. These primates had prominent jaws, large brains, lived in groups, and went on to make tools.
Fun Facts of the Pliocene Epoch:
What was it like back then?
- Joining of the tectonic plates of North and South America, leading to a land bridge and allowing for migration between the two continents.
- Tectonic plates of India and Asia collided, forming the Himalayas.
- Cooling of polar ice caps froze Antarctica
- The oldest fossils from this group, a toe bone, jawbone, and teeth, were found in Ethiopia and date back 5.2 million years.
