Geography

Belgium is situated in the west of Europe, bordered to the north by the Netherlands, to the east by Germany and to the south and the west by France. It is also one of the smallest countries in Europe, the country also has a narrow coastline along the North Sea

There are few religions that are practiced; however, the most practiced by Belgium's population is Roman Catholicism which is estimated to be practiced by approximately 75% and anyother relgions practiced in belgium they all equal to approximately 25% (such as islam, christianity, buddism, protestant and more).

Belgium is divided into three communities based on language: In the north are the Flemings, who speak Flemish (Dutch), in the south are the Walloons, who speak French, and in the city of Liège there is a small German-speaking population.

HISTORY

Belgium, country of northwestern Europe. It is one of the smallest and most densely populated European countries, and it has been, since its independence in 1830. However, Germany occupied Belgium early in World War I. After five years, the Treaty of Versailles brought independence back to Belgium. However, Germany would occupy the region once again during World War II. Germany was driven from Belgium with the help of American and British forces.

1940 - World War Two. Germany invades Belgium and Holland. Belgian government evacuates to London. King Leopold surrenders to German forces.

1920 - Belgium abandons neutrality and signs military alliance with France.

1830 - Declaration of independence from Netherlands.

1914-18 World War One: Germany invades and conquers majority of the country, the Belgian army withdraws

1930 - Flanders and Wallonia legally become unilingual regions.

1944 - Allied forces liberate Belgium.

Following the Campaigns of 1794 of the French Revolutionary Wars, Belgium Austriacum was invaded and annexed by France in 1795, ending Habsburg rule. Southern Netherlands and the territory of Liège was divided into nine united départements and became an integral part of France.

The love of berets and smocks among Belgian men originated from the French rule. The late 19th century began to see a new fashion in the form of tailored suits. Up until the 20th century, boys wore dresses with pantalettes (an undergarment for girls and boys) or tunics. School children also wore smocks.
