The Contents of Children's Minds by G. Stanley Hall was released.

1883

Darwin's theory helped inspired future developmental psychologists

Late 1800s

The "Nature vs. Nurture" debate helped kickstart the idea of evolution and eventual child psychology.

Enlightment Era

Rosseau released the 5 book series Emile: or On Education.

1762

Psyhology as a whole was becoming more recognized as a scientific dicipline with Wundt and James.

1879

Darwin released his theory of evolution.

1859

Locke and Rosseau proposed that children are psychologically different from adults; increased education.

Enlightment Era

Baldwin released his theory on the "Baldwin Effect" to explain social evolution of lifelong trait learning.

1896

Despite imporvements to the education system, very few students advanced past grade school.

1900s

Freud first created his "psychosexual theory" of early childhood.

1905

Freud created the "seduction hypothesis" where psychoneuroses was caused by early repressed sexual abuse.

1890s-1900s

G. Stanley Hall has done a lot more things to help developmental psychology, even finding the American Psychological Association (APA).

1892

Freud's psychosexual theory has been debunked, failing to mention women's psychosexual development, being too vague, and not being possible to test scientifically.

1900s

James Sully wrote "Studies of Childhood"

1895

At first, Baldwin's ideas were not widely accepted, but eventually was in the 2000s.

Jean Piaget released his "Cognitive Development"

Erikson, against Freud, created his 5 stages of development.

Albert Bandura created the "social cognitive theory".

More children were staying in school and even attending college.

20th Century

With a revolutionary new outlook on the lifespan of a person, Erikson paved the way for more hands-on parenting and learning.

Education is more focused on skill-building in the new era and less on information.

Developmental psychologists were starting to become more interested in more broader issues.
