Ireland & Scotland
Halloween started in Ireland, where it was called Samhain. People would dress up in costumes and carve pumpkins, just like we do today. They believed that on Samhain, the border between the world of the living and the world of the dead dissolved, so they would light bonfires to keep away any evil spirits.
